'Women are still buying clothes despite recession'
The current economic climate will not put women off clothes shopping, the fashion director of Cosmopolitan said today.
'Women are still buying clothes despite recession'
According to the fashion expert the shopping trend may continue if women think about buying clothes that have more longevity.
Last year £60.7 billion of retail spending was put on credit cards in the UK, according to statistics released yesterday by Apacs.
This was a rise of £0.6 billion from the year before.
Shelly Vella said: "The one thing that makes you better in times like this is looking good. I think women will be a little bit savvier about where they spend their money but they are still going to spend money."
Meanwhile, the online fashion retailer ASOS today announced record sales for the last year. Their profits soared by 117 per cent to £7.3 million and their sales grew by 90 per cent.
Figures from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) showed that retail sales in the UK remained broadly flat in the past year. Of the retailers questioned for the CBI's latest Distributive Trades Survey, 44 per cent said that year-on-year sales volumes rose in the first half of April, and 41 per cent said they were down.
