Which?: Cheques should not be abolished

Cheques should not be abolished because they are still relied on by many people, Britain's largest consumer watchdog has stated.
According to James Daley, money editor at Which?, many people who are housebound use cheques and some people only feel comfortable paying tradesmen with this payment method.
His comments follow news that banking industry leaders are to meet to discuss the possibility of phasing out the use of cheques.
Were this plan to go ahead, consumers would have to find alternative payment methods such as debit or credit cards to use instead of cheques.
Debit and credit card payments can sometimes have an advantage over cheques as payment can clear faster when using plastic.
Mr Daley added: "We did a survey of our members in October and 92 per cent of them said that they have written a cheque in the last year. So it's clearly a service that a lot of people are still using."
