Secure online account service PayPal has warned internet users not to click on a link in an email for which they doubt the authenticity.
Instead, people should enter the link of the trusted organisation and if they do have an urgent message it will show up when they log in to their account.
Head of risk management at PayPal Garreth Griffith said: "With more people than ever banking online in the UK it's really important that people remain vigilant whenever they are making financial transactions online and don't inadvertently leave themselves open to becoming a victim of a scam or fraud."
Mr Griffith suggested that consumers can better protect themselves online by being wary of generic greetings in emails, a fake sender's address or a false sense of urgency in the email.
A recent study from CreditExpert has found that those who are young, single and in rented accommodation are particularly at risk from identity fraud. This is because they are likely to move house frequently without forwarding post such as credit card statements.
