Use a rewards credit card to pay for 'festive extras'

Britons have been urged to use a rewards credit card to pay for the hidden costs of Christmas after new revealed the true cost of the festive period.

American Express has published a report which revealed that UK consumers are set to spend around £10.2 billion on 'seasonal trimmings' such as festive drinks, work parties and travel to see loved ones.

Britons are expected to spend an average of £210 each on these additional activities, on top of what they have already budgeted for presents, food and drink.

Julie Hay, head of credit cards at American Express, urged UK consumers to get a rewards credit card for these extra costs.

She said: "By using a rewards credit card to purchase your 'seasonal trimmings', savvy consumers can benefit from earning cash-back on their spending, which means they can treat themselves the following Christmas or alleviate costs of the festive season next year."

Those looking for a rewards card could opt for Capital One's World MasterCard, which offers five per cent cash-back on all purchases.
