Travellers eye currency card deals
Mastercard is seeing interest in its affiliated currency cards boom as poor exchange rates force Brits to consider new ways to save money.
One broker, FairFX, noted a 60% increase in card customers in January compared to the preceding month, according to the Evening Standard.
FairFX chief executive Stephen Heath told the newspaper: "The consumer mindset has shifted towards 'every penny counts' as people try to offset the rising cost of living by planning ahead."
He added travellers could save more than 6% by using currency cards instead of airport bureaux de change.
The plastic is also useful for online shopping, with one user claiming to cut "around £2" off his bill on every purchase by avoiding credit card transaction fees and poor exchange rates.
Currency cards can be loaded with either euros or US dollars and used like a debit card at shops and restaurants or to withdraw money at cash points.
