Tips for safe holiday spending
Credit card and debit card holders can take a few measures on holiday to keep their money safe, according to Fiona Wilkinson, senior vice president at Visa Europe.
She advised: "Always check the amount you've been asked to pay and keep your receipts so you can check the amount on your statement when you get back home. Never write down your Pin and try to keep different cards in separate places - that way you won't lose everything if something goes wrong."
The advice comes as visa transactions at travel operators show spending is down on holiday bookings.
According to Visa Europe, the annual jump in holiday bookings in January and February compared to the previous months did not happen this year. The number of Visa transactions at travel agencies and operators remained static in the first quarter, while the amount spent actually dropped by two per cent.
Those who are taking their annual break may be cutting down on the luxury this year. A survey suggests that 36 per cent of Brits say they will be downgrading their hotel.
The survey by On the Beach on Brits showed that almost half of those asked said they would be cutting their annual summer holiday from their normal two weeks to just one.
