'The weather affects people's spending habits'
After the state of the economy and how people feel about their finances, the factor that affects people's spending habits the most is the weather, it has been suggested.
According to a spokesperson from the British Retail Consortium, at the start of the summer people want to buy seasonal clothing and barbeque foods.
However, if the weather becomes unseasonable, people no longer want to buy these types of goods and retailers can be left with a lot of unsold items.
Ideally, the retail sector likes weather that is appropriate for the season, spokesperson Richard Dodd suggested.
"The ordinary process is a relatively long-term one especially for the kind of non-food goods that we are talking about, so retailers haven't got very much scope for ordering less or having less store stocks for those kinds of things," he continued.
Some credit cards offer consumers ways to save points every time they spend to buy goods later on, regardless of the weather.
The Tesco Clubcard credit card, for example, allows card holders to collect Clubcard points on all purchases when they buy at Tesco or anywhere else.
The card's rate is 16.9% APR variable, and there is 0% interest on all purchases for 12 months from the day on which the account is opened.
