According to an advertising network provider, retailers are very excited about setting up shop on Facebook because they see it as a clear path to improving revenue and brand differentiation.
Brian Howe, chief strategy officer at Alvenda, said the provider sees social networks as a powerful home base for gifting.
He said that its clients choose where they want to sell their services.
"Our vision includes gift lists, events sharing, group gifting and of course enabling the transaction wherever the customer happens to be," he continued.
Mr Howe's comments follow the release of a report from the Nielson Company which suggests that Facebook is visited monthly by three in every ten people online.
According to the research, one in every 11 minutes online globally is spent on social network and blogging sites.
Consumer Focus has recently advised anyone paying in advance for products online to pay by credit card so that their purchase is guaranteed.
