'Students should keep a copy of their credit card numbers'
Students heading off to university should make sure they have a copy of their credit card numbers stored separately from their credit cards, according to advice from Saga.
The credit card provider suggested that this way, if credit cards are lost or stolen, students still have access to the details of the stolen cards.
Saga's suggestions follow research from the credit card provider that shows one in three students fall victim to crime at university each year.
According to the statistics, around a quarter of all burglaries at university are through an open or insecure door or window and take place within a few weeks of the start of a new term.
As well as keeping record of credit card numbers, Saga has also recommended that students should make sure their valuables can't be seen from the outside.
It also recommended using a UV market pen to mark possessions with a name and student ID number.
Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of Saga Group, said: "For many students, making new friends and socialising will be higher on their agenda than being security conscious. This could make them easy targets for criminals. A few simple security measures however, can greatly reduce the risk of them becoming a victim."
Saga is currently offering a credit card with a purchase rate of typical 11.9% APR variable. The Saga platinum card has 0% on purchases for the first nine months from the date on which the account is opened.
