Credit card holders who used their cards for payments in Spain this year could have been affected by a major credit card scam, it has been reported.

According to the BBC, UK Visa or MasterCard credit card holders will be contacted directly if they are thought to be at risk.
Credit card holders have also been advised to check their statements, but have been reassured they will be protected against this type of fraud.
The BBC also notes that as many as 100,000 cards have reportedly been recalled in Germany already.
The data compromise problem seems to have occurred somewhere in the payment chain, rather than being in issue with Visa or MasterCard systems.
In related news, credit card holders planning do to their Christmas shopping online have been advised to use up-to-date anti-virus software to stay safe on the web.
Credit card holders have also been advised to look for the padlock symbol when shopping as this can indicate that a site is more likely to be trustworthy.
