South Devon shop falls victim to card cloning
Retailers in south Devon have been prompted to exercise greater vigilance when accepting plastic payment as details emerge of a multi-million pound global credit card cloning operation.
Southwark Crown Court heard earlier this week (April 7th) how a gang of five, all hailing from Walworth, London made £3.5 million from the illegal operation in just over a week between September 28th and October 8th last year.
It has now emerged that the accused, who have already pleaded guilty to charges, extended their fraudulent activities to a Torquay jewellery store, the Herald Express reports.
Diamond jewellery found in the gang's flat and worth £1,595.29 is alleged to have been purchased from Goldsmiths in Union Street.
The trial continues.
Meanwhile, the government announced last month that it is setting up a three-year National Fraud Strategy to try and curb crimes of this nature.
Among the new initiatives are more legal powers for prosecutors and a national fraud reporting centre.
