Should Michelle Obama get her credit card out?

In a blog for the Los Angeles Times, Monica Corcoran explains the first lady wore a pair of $17,000 (£12,473) diamond earrings for the We Are One concert which took place in recent days.

They were not a gift from her husband, but rather borrowed from a retailer in the local area before being returned.

She notes Mrs Obama's status as something of a "style icon" has been cemented by critics and consumers alike, with outfits she has worn for recent engagements selling out shortly afterwards.

Ms Corcoran concludes by asking: "Do you think the first lady should be calling in gowns and gems or pull out that credit card and rely on her own wardrobe?"

President Obama was recently sworn in as president for the second time after a word was spoken out of place in his inauguration ceremony earlier this week.
