Security products 'should be used for web protection'

Technical director at Websense, Mark Murtagh, said that people's behaviour when using the internet can only go so far to avoid security threats.

Awareness of web security is particularly important when using the internet for online shopping with credit cards.

Mr Murtagh recommended: "A solution that automatically analyses and secures web traffic in real-time, enabling safe use of the latest web 2.0 sites and tools".

There are many products that provide this protection and discover potential security risks, he continued.

External affairs director at Equifax, Neil Munroe, recently stated that credit cards offer consumers security because they are covered for losses though the banking code, so long as they are not negligent.

The credit card company, as well as the merchant, is liable if there is a problem with the purchase, he continued.
