A spokesman for travelsupermarket.com, a site which offers advice on obtaining the best deals when looking for a holiday, said keeping a close eye on your transactions was always a good idea.
Duncan Barraclough, head of hotels at the company, said the rules should not change simply because you are away from home - as the same threats exist internationally.
"Things like making sure the card is within your eyesight [are important]," he said, adding that when a purchase is made, consumers should be "happy that your transaction is being done through a reputable establishment".
In a recent survey commissioned by the group, it was found that last year around 31 per cent of travellers told their card provider they were heading to a different country in advance.
