New research from credit card provider Sainsbury's Finance has discovered that around 6,900 personal loans have been taken out to wholly or partially fund dental surgery since early 2007.
The data revealed that £60.2 million has been borrowed in total, with the average size of personal loan taken out for dental treatment being £6.492.
According to Steven Baillie, head of loans at Sainsbury's, dental treatments can cost a lot more than people have in readily available funds.
Mr Baillie suggested that this is why "loans have for some time been a popular way to finance treatments and spread the cost."
The head of loans suggested that those who decide to pay for expensive dental treatments with a loan should shop around to make sure they find the best rate, as this could save them a considerable amount in the future.
As well as offering personal loans, Sainsbury's Finance also offers a credit card with 0% for the first 12 months on Sainsbury's shopping, from the date of opening the account. The rate is 16.9% APR variable, with 0% for the first three months on all other shopping.
