Sainsbury's Credit Cards: Credit card holders are 'starting to benefit from their reward schemes'
More people are starting to take advantage of the rewards offered by credit card providers, according to research from Sainsbury's Credit Cards.
The credit card provider carried out a survey which revealed that 54% of credit cardholders with a reward scheme have claimed all or some of the rewards they have earned in the past year.
This is in comparison to just 23% of those polled who said they had claimed some of their rewards a year ago.
According to the Sainsbury's Credit Cards research, the main reason people gave for not claiming their rewards was that the amount accrued was too small.
However, the average value of rewards earned on credit cards in the past year is an estimated £79.33, the credit card provider said.
Craig Hunter at Sainsbury's Credit Cards, said: "The recession has made a lot of people reassess their finances and it's great to see that people are starting to make the most of the rewards on offer via their credit cards.
"Those with cards that offer no, or poor rewards should ensure they get the best bang for their buck and shop around to make sure any reward scheme they sign up to suits their lifestyle and spending habits best."
American Express is currently offering a British Airways credit card which allows holders to collect airmiles as they spend.
A total of 1,000 bonus airmiles are also offered to credit card holders who spend over £500 on the British Airways card during the first three months of membership.
