Ryanair's credit card policy has been criticised by a competition watchdog, it has been reported.
Credit card holders must pay £5 per person per flight, unless they have a prepaid MasterCard.
This type of card also has many other advantages for those planning a trip abroad.
The card works in much the same way as a debit or credit card, except it must be preloaded with money before it can be used.
However, all Ryanair passengers without this type of card have to pay the additional fee, which works out as an extra £40 for a family of four booking return flights.
Chief executive of the Office of Fair Trading John Fingleton has accused the airline of "playing silly games".
Spokesman Stephen McNamara responded to the criticism, saying: "Ryanair is not for the overpaid John Fingletons of this world but for the everyday Joe Bloggs who opt for Ryanair's guaranteed lowest fares."
