Sales for these items increased by 7.1% during the period, according to the Office of National Statistics.
Meanwhile, the total sales volume was 0.6% higher than the same period last year, the lowest growth since December. The only other times since then that growth has been this low was last month and in January 1996.
Credit card provider Barclays commented that there are some promising signs in the sales sector which could have a positive effect later on in the year.
"Sterling's continued recovery against the US dollar and the euro sheds a welcome light on the sector for all those who have budgeted to operate beneath the current exchange levels," the credit card provider said.
