Credit card users are still treating loved ones to presents on Valentine's Day, despite the current economic climate, according to new research.
Undertaken by Barclaycard Payment Acceptance, the study revealed spending in restaurants increased 20 per cent on the previous week, while purchases of flowers were up 168.8 per cent on the same time.
Jewellery also seemed to be popular with Romeos and Juliets, with a 67 per cent growth of sales reported between February 7th and 14th.
Stewart Roberts, business development director at Barclaycard, said: "People are still keen to splash out on their loved ones on Valentine's Day."
However, he added consumers were tightening their belts, with spending "significantly down" and diners choosing to eat at home instead of at a restaurant.
In other news that may be of interest to credit card holders, the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index has revealed online shopping grew 19 per cent in January.
Mike Petevinos, head of UK consulting for retail at Capgemini said the results showed more consumers were turning towards the internet.
