Payment system using mobile phones trialled
Technology is being trialled in the United States that will enable people to make purchases with their mobile phones.
Cards are fitted into mobile phones so that users can simply wave their mobile phones at contactless-enabled readers to make payments.
It is hoped that the new system will make payments faster and simpler, much in the same way that new contactless credit cards introduced by Mastercard and Barclaycard could improve payment systems in the UK.
The trial in Maine in conjunction with Wright Express Corporation, Sheetz and ViVOtech has been successfully completed.
Russ Lamer, Wright Express manager of emerging technologies, said: "The mobile payment pilot was a huge success, meeting and exceeding our initial objectives."
EAT, Pret a Manger and Yo! Sushi are just some of the places in the UK that debit and credit card holders can use a contactless card payment system.
Contactless pay point machines have recently been introduced in selected Boots stores across the UK as well. By the end of the year, Boots will have installed 'tap and go' terminals in 15 stores in London and six in Liverpool.
