Parents spend £224 on children each school term

Sending children back to school each term costs British parents roughly £2.3 billion in preparation, that's £224 per kid.

According to research from Santander Credit Cards, who got Opinium Research to quiz 2,002 people on the matter, parents spend this money on items such as stationery, clothes and books. That's before they factor in the cost of getting kids to and from school, whether that's by bus or giving them a lift, which parents spend roughly £44 per week on.

No doubt many parents will be tempted to turn to their credit cards to fund the education of their children. While this may seem like an investment in the kids' future, it could have a detrimental effect on the parents' own. Search for a credit card with low transaction fees and interest rates so that there will be less of a sting when the bill comes through.

Chief executive officer of Santander Cards Alan Mathewson said: "Kitting out children for the new school term is an expensive task, which comes at a time when many families are under financial pressure and looking to rein in their spending."
