Online merchants 'must offer a variety of payment methods'
Online retailers should offer consumers a choice of payment methods, according to director of e-commerce operations at ClickandBuy.
Online merchants 'must offer a variety of payment methods'
Director Nick Drew said that a variety of payment methods, which usually include credit cards, makes consumers feel safer shopping online.
He said: "British consumers are creatures of habit. If they have a favourite method of payment with which they feel safe and comfortable using, then they are more likely to want to continue using this rather than try something new."
He said that consumers may feel that a site is more legitimate if it has been vetted by more than one payment company.
His comments follow the release of data from a survey by YouGov, commissioned by ClickandBuy, showing that 50 per cent of frequent online shoppers will cancel their purchase if they realise that their preferred method of payment is not available.
Mr Drew suggested that e-commerce was likely to grow, but only for retailers who offer a variety of payment methods.
