This statement follows research from electronic payment and risk management solutions provider Cybersource which shows that fraudsters were responsible for airline losses of £944 million during 2008 - which is 1.3 per cent of the total revenue airlines take via the web.
In related card security news, another study - carried out by Unisys - has also revealed recently that 88 per cent of consumers are concerned about others gaining access to their credit card details.
Jemma Smith, the head of PR at the association, states that features offered by credit card suppliers MasterCard and Visa, such as the SecureCode and Verified functions - help prevent online fraud from occurring within the travel sector.
While she does state that the travel industry could be a target for fraudsters, she adds that "if you look at the UK figures [for card fraud], the travel sector isn't one of the biggest areas hit".
