One per cent of UK credit card holders 'own a secret card'
There are more than 200,000 secret credit cards in the UK, according to research by Halifax.
Halifax says that most people are honest with their partners about their finances, but about 1% of cardholders with partners keep credit cards a secret.
The largest item respondents admitted to purchasing on secret credit cards cost less than £500. Items bought included electrical goods and a holiday.
Adrian Bryant, head of marketing for Halifax credit cards, warned: "It's important that people are honest about their finances with their partner as it may affect their ability to secure products in joint names."
When applying jointly for products, couples could be asked to admit to any outstanding debt - potentially an embarrassing situation if they have secret credit cards, Halifax said.
According to the payments industry association Apacs figures, plastic cards accounted for 66% of the total amount spent by UK consumers last year.
