There has been a real growth in the number of 'savvy shoppers' who shop online using their debit or credit card rather than hitting the high street, or who go to the shops on their own instead of with friends or family, it has been suggested.
These shoppers also know what they want to buy and then go to find if there is a deal on it, before handing over their cash or credit card, according to retail research director at GfK NOP, Helen Roberts.
The international research authority said shoppers in general are being more careful about what they buy and have learnt over the last year to 18 months not just to whip out their credit card or cash and buy the first thing they see but rather bide their time.
"That's really what is coming through with the data so far, that basically says that we are going to be more cautious about what we buy and where we buy it from at Christmas.
"We have all learned that we can get what we want cheaper than we used to be able to if we shop around a bit," Ms Roberts commented.
According to the Nielson Shop Price Index for September, published by the British Retail Consortium, shop prices fell 0.1 per cent in September compared to the same time last year.
