'No own-brand beans' despite the crunch
Even though more than 22 million people are heading to cheaper supermarkets with their credit cards in order to save money this year, the idea of own-brand baked beans and ketchup is too much for some consumers.
A consumer spending survey by uSwitch.com indicates while many people are more than happy to head to Aldi rather than Waitrose, taking home anything other than Heinz tomato ketchup and baked beans is not on the cards.
Nearly half (44 per cent) of people said they will always purchase Heinz tomato sauce instead of a supermarket's own brand, regardless of price, while 39 per cent show the same loyalty to the brand's baked beans.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, states: "Our research shows that consumers are prepared to make sacrifices to cut costs - including shopping at a budget supermarket.
"But when it comes to favourite brands, beans really do mean Heinz."
Heinz has a history dating back to 1892.
