M&S Money: Students should make sure their bikes are insured
The warning follows the release of a survey by the credit card provider which found 22% of student cyclists have had their bikes stolen.
Furthermore, of a total of 2,000 polled, 14% of students said they had been burgled while at university.
M&S Money recommended that students register their bike model, make and frame number for identification purposes if the bike is stolen.
Students should always lock their bikes and not leave them in isolated or dimly lit places, according to the credit card provider.
Steve Price, M&S head of general insurance, said: "Cycling has grown in popularity in recent years among green-minded students who want to save money and do their bit for the environment.
"Unfortunately, bikes are a prime target for thieves and cyclists should take basic security steps to decrease the risk of becoming a victim."
The credit card provider has also warned dog owners that the summer months can be particularly hazardous for the pets.
