M&S Money: Independent travellers should ensure they have the correct insurance
The company, which has been rated a top-ten credit card provider, made the suggestion following the collapse of Slovakia-based SkyEurope, which left passengers stranded on September 1st when it suspended flights with immediate effect.
According to M&S Money, most travel insurance policies do not offer cover in the event of an airline or holiday company going bust because travelers are protected if they have booked through a tour operator.
However, increasing numbers of travellers are booking holidays independently with the rise in popularity of low cost airlines.
The credit card provider recommends M&S Premier travel insurance since it includes cover for independent travellers.
Steve Price, M&S head of general insurance, said: "Whilst passengers booking flights as part of a package holiday enjoy protection in the event of an airline collapse, travellers booking flights independently can often find themselves stranded and out of pocket."
M&S is also currently offering a credit card with a typical rate of 15.9% APR variable.
There is 0% interest on all shopping for ten months from the date on which the account is opened, as well as 0% on balance transfers for six months with a 2% transfer fee.
