Top-ten credit card provider M&S Money has warned dog owners that the summer months can prove a hazardous time for their pets.
M&S Money: Dog owners should watch out for summer hazards.
According to M&S Money, summer is one of the busiest times of the year for veterinary nurses at an advice line for M&S pet insurance customers.
Seasonal hazards can include algal blooms in stagnant ponds, which dogs can be exposed to when they are allowed to cool down by having a swim.
The credit card provider warned that people often do not realise they are exposing their dog to toxic compounds caused by algae which can cause them to vomit, suffer from diarhoea and lethargy, even when they have swallowed just a small amount of the water.
Another hazard can be conkers, since a bumper crop is falling early due to weather conditions.
"Conkers can cause serious illness in dogs if ingested in large amounts, M&S Money warned.
M&S Money insurance manager, Steve Price, said: "The weather may have been disappointing this summer but it hasn't stopped dogs from suffering the usual seasonal ailments.
"M&S pet insurance policyholders who need urgent advice are able to call on a qualified veterinary expert round the clock."
The credit card provider has also advised student cyclists to check they are insured before leaving home, following a survey that showed almost a quarter of cyclists at UK universities have been the victim of a bike thief.
