Magazine questions menstrual spending link
An editor from women's magazine Cosmopolitan has disputed suggestions female shoppers are more prone to over-use credit cards in the days leading up to their period.
An editor from women's magazine Cosmopolitan has disputed suggestions female shoppers are more prone to over-use credit cards in the days leading up to their period.
Fiona Cowood, who oversees features at the publication, insists blaming biology alone for spending sprees is "reductive".
She explains: "It's suggesting yet again that women are completely at the mercy of their hormones and that they can't do anything about it.
"I think most of us know if we are over the limits on our overdrafts and whether it's hormone time or not, we know whether it's wise to make a purchase."
However, she concedes it may be useful for some women to test the theory and make a mental note to "keep your credit card in your purse" when shopping towards the end of a menstrual cycle.
The study was carried out by professor Karen Pine of Hertfordshire University, who surveyed over 400 women on their spending habits.
