'Look at your credit card statement as soon as it arrives', users are advised

The statement will tell credit card users when their payment is due, so failing to pay attention to the letter could leave users with a fine and a black mark on their credit rating, MoneyExpert.com has warned.

It is also important to make at least the minimum repayment every month, likely to be around 3% of the outstanding balance, although ideally credit card users should pay off their entire balance every month.

The finance advice service also suggested credit card holders should look into the perks they may be entitled to.

"Barclay's Simplicity credit card, for example, offers two-for-one deals when you use the card to purchase Domino’s Pizza, Thomas Cook holidays and tickets with Ticketmaster.

"While Lloyds TSB’s Airmiles Duo card offers one airmile for every pound spent," it continued.

Perks are also available with the American Express platinum credit card, which grants holders access to airport lounges, annual travel insurance and preferential treatment when they travel.
