Improve your credit rating to boost chance of obtaining a credit card
Britons looking to improve their chances of obtaining a credit card should aim to boost their credit rating, according to a financial expert.
A credit score rates a consumer's reliability as a borrower by recording their repayment history on everything from debit cards and personal loans to mobile phone bills.
Lucy Tobin, writing for the Evening Standard, urged Brits to check their credit report before making steps to improve it.
She said: "Read through the report and ensure it is accurate: if not, get in touch with the credit agency to correct any mistakes and add notes to explain any reasons for delayed payments.
"To improve your rating in the long term, close any unused bank or mobile accounts and store cards, install a landline telephone, go on the electoral roll and always pay bills on time."
UL consumers can check their credit report via a provider such as Experian and Equifax.
