Holidaymakers are spending less is airports, says Santander Cards
Credit card provider Santander Cards has discovered that the amount of cash British holidaymakers spend in airport departure lounges has decreased significantly in the last year.
Holidaymakers are spending less is airports, says Santander Cards
As the recession effects holiday spending Santander has revealed that airport spending has decreased from £1 billion in September 2007 to £378 million.
Although the number of people who spend at airports has hardly changed, the amount spent per person has significantly dropped from £65 to £24.
However, books, food and drink, toiletries and clothes have all gone against the trend, with the amount spent on these items increasingly slightly, the credit card provider found.
Callum Gibson, director of Santander cards, said: "With holidaymakers trying to make their money go further this year, it's not surprising that non-essential spending at the airport has fallen dramatically in the last 12 months."
Mr Gibson suggested that Santander's Zero credit card provides a solution for holidaymakers who do not want the hassle of using up leftover foreign currency or changing it back.
The credit card has no foreign exchange fee and no fee for cash advance.
Balance transfers are offered at 0% for 12 months with the card, as well as purchases for three months from the date on which the account is opened.
The number of people holidaying in Europe could be set to increase, spurred on by a fall in hotel prices, it has been reported.
According to the trivago Hotel Price Index, European hotels have dropped prices by 7% since July 2008.
