HMRC warns of credit card email scams
Credit card customers should be aware of scam emails, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has warned.
In a statement, the organisation explains more fraudulent attempts to obtain personal information could take place after January 31st as people wait to hear about genuine tax refunds.
The body notes such scams tell recipients they are eligible for cash and asks for details such as credit card information so the fictitious refund can be paid out.
Anyone who provides details to such fraudsters risks having their credit cards used to their limit, the organisation adds.
Lesley Strathie, chief executive at HMRC, says: "This is the most sophisticated and prolific phishing scam that we have encountered. We only ever contact customers who are due a refund in writing by post."
She encourages anyone who does receive such an email to send it to the organisation to have it investigated.
HMRC was formed in 2005.
