Halifax student current account holders 'entitled to 20% off credit card insurance'
Halifax is currently offering a 20% discount on its debit, store, charge and credit card insurance with the Halifax student current account.
The Card Care card protection insurance will cover credit cards as well as other types of cards for use in the UK and abroad, according to Halifax.
Other offers are also being made available to students as the university autumn term starts this year.
These include commission-free currency and traveller's cheques, plus a 25% discount on AA breakdown cover with the student current account.
According to research by Halifax, the cost of students' term time living has increased by 5% in comparison to 2008.
However, due to the current economic climate, 59% of students claim to have cut back on day-to-day spends.
Mike Regnier, current account director for Halifax, said: "Our research shows that many students are spending over £200 on weekly living expenses, despite thinking that they are cutting back.
"At the moment it's more important than ever for students not only to set a budget and stick to it, but also to minimise the cost of any borrowing."
Meanwhile, Tesco Compare has advised students to shop around before choosing the credit card package that best suits them.
The credit card provider said that there are many credit card deals on the market and that students should not assume that their current account provider will be offering the best deal.
