Credit card holders should consider installing a safe at home for these and other small valuables such as jewellery and watches, according to advice from Halifax Home Insurance.
The insurance provider carried out a survey which revealed that 29% of burglaries last year were unforced through open or unlocked doors and windows.
August is the peak time for unforced burglaries, Halifax revealed, as this is when the weather is at its hottest and people leave the most doors and windows unlocked.
According to Halifax, people are failing to take steps to protect their homes from theft, despite figures from the Home Office which suggest burglary is rising.
Senior claims manager Martyn Foulds said: "Small items such as wallets, car keys, MP3 players and digital cameras are particularly at risk.
"We'd recommend people close windows when they are not in the room and lock their front door when they are out in the back garden."
