Half term could cost British parents £655m

It isn't long until the kids will be getting a week off school, so parents have already begun planning how to keep them entertained. But with taking children out for day trips being top of the list, many parents may find this half term a costly affair.

Research by the credit card company American Express states that parents will spend £86 per day trip on average, meaning that collectively British families will spend £655 million on trips out this half term.

Unsurprisingly, this causes parents stress and 34 per cent say that budgeting this half term is top of their list of worries.

Vice president of consumer card acquisition UK at American Express Nicholas Stefanovitz explained that planning day trips need not make parents worry about their finances.

He said: "For those who have credit or charge cards that earn rewards, it's worth checking your current balance, as your rewards balance could help pay towards activities or family meals this half term."
