Grand National spending splurge revealed
Cash, debit and credit cards were out in force last Saturday (April 4th) as estimates published this week reveal the enormous sum wagered on Grand National horses.
The Guardian suggests approximately £150 million worth of bets were placed on the race, which was won by 100-1 outsider Mon Mome.
However, the BBC puts this figure much higher - at £250 million - the majority of which went on favourites including My Will and Rambling Minster.
The spending figures defy the current economic gloom, which many had predicted would curb bookmaker earnings.
In fact, the betting industry recorded one of its best races in years, with shares in Ladbrokes and William Hill up 3% and 1.3% respectively.
Last week (April 2nd) security solutions company Webroot issued a warning advising internet users to practise safe online habits when placing a bet for the Grand National online.
The firm noted a recent increase in the number of keyloggers being rapidly updated by the malware authors who created them, potentially putting personal information such as credit card numbers at risk.
