Expert: Check credit card statements regularly
Kerry D'Souza, CPP card fraud expert, said consumers need to become more vigilant "by making sure that they are using websites which are secure and also making sure that they are checking what is coming out of their accounts".
She urged customers to obtain a receipt when using credit cards and compare it with statements, suggesting anti-spyware and anti-phishing software should be implemented when using credit cards on the internet.
Ms D'Souza added the banks have increased their security measures in recent years, such as introducing the Verified by Visa scheme.
These recommendations follow the publication of CPP's annual Card Fraud Index report, commissioned by Opinion Matters.
According to the research, conducted last month, 26 per cent of British people have been a victim of credit card fraud. This is a rise of five per cent since 2007.
