The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has joined up with celebrities such as Kate Nash, Dave Rowntree from Blue and England rugby captain Steve Borthwick to launch a campaign to raise awareness of the issue.
Research from the OFT has shown one in five people knows someone who has bought tickets using a debit or credit card to a music, sport or theatre event from a scam ticket website.
Victims lost an average of £80 each, the study revealed.
Men were also found to be twice as likely to be duped by such scams as women.
Platinum-selling artist Kate Nash said she thought it was "disgusting" people would want to scam others who want to go to gigs and enjoy themselves.
"They just get ripped off and disappointed, turning something positive into something negative," she said.
"People should check that the website selling the tickets is legitimate before they buy their tickets."
According to the OFT, mass marketed scams affect around three million consumers every year, costing a total of £3.5 billion.
