Dan Oliver, editor of .netmagazine, said online operators face much smaller overheads than high street retailers so they can afford to charge customers less for the same products.
This is one of the reasons why most high street retailers now have websites where they often offer discounts on in-store products to those who choose to shop online using their debit or credit card, he explained.
Mr Oliver also recommended consumer electronics as one area where people can shop online using debit or credit cards with minimal risks but huge financial rewards.
His comments follow the release of research from PricewaterhouseCoopers, suggesting that consumers can save around £560 a year from shopping and paying bills online.
The research also suggested that unemployed people who get online could increase their lifetime savings by over £12,000.
