Debit and credit card holders spent more between December 19th and 31st December 2009 than the previous year, according to Barclaycard Payment Acceptance.
New figures released by the processor of debit and credit card transactions reveal the busiest day for turnover before Christmas was December 23rd with £497 million being spent.
Sales peaked after Christmas at £376 million on December 29th.
Debit and credit card holders also shopped throughout the festive holiday, with 32 transactions made every second on Christmas Day.
Meanwhile on Boxing Day, the average credit card transaction was £72.46. Purchases were largely made at DIY and electronic stores, according to Barclaycard Payment Acceptance.
Barclaycard is currently offering a platinum credit card with a typical variable rate of 14.9% APR. There is 0% interest on balance transfers on the card for 12 months from the account opening date, with a 2.5% handling fee.
