Charges for using payment cards, which could include debit and credit cards, need to be made clear to customers by airlines, according to the Office of Fair Trading.
Debit and credit card charges 'must be made clear'
The UK's consumer and competition authority commented that it is a commercial decision whether airlines charge their customers for debit or credit card payments during flight bookings.
However, airlines must make it clear to customers that they will be charged.
The comments follow new statistics from Which? Holiday showing that some airlines have increased the cost of using a debit or credit card to book flights by over 600 per cent in the past 18 months.
Ryanair, for example, now charges £5, whereas 18 months ago it charged £2, to book tickets using a credit card.
A spokesperson from the Office of Fair Trading commented: "We've done a lot of work with airlines and have said that they need to ensure their advertising and processes are clear."
