According to the Mobile Data Association, adopting such methods would allow for a "more secure" service.
Chairman of the group Steve Reynolds explained the industry needed to be aware of the issue of data protection.
He went on to note that data sent and received from mobile phones must be encrypted and there is an ability to remotely immobilise the devices.
"We can also build in a form of proximity protection whereby if the phone is taken away from the person it's disabled," Mr Reynolds concluded.
The association's comments follow research from Ingenico, which surveyed 1,000 people.
Among the results in the poll, over two in five (41 per cent) would consider using a mobile payment service.
The top three reasons for using the technology were outlined as convenience, less queuing time and the reduced need to carry around cash and cards.
