Credit cards 'to pay for taxis'
People in Essex are now able to use their credit card to pay for taxi rides.
Basildon taxi drivers have installed chip and pin machines into their cabs, the Echo has reported.
The paper reveals that the taxi drivers at the private firm Taxicall believe the new system brings in extra business. A total of fifteen machines have already been installed and more drivers are hoping to implement them.
Cabbie Eddie Ring from Billericay told the Echo: "I thought of it because I kept getting businessmen asking if I took cards because they weren't carrying cash. It's already becoming very popular."
Heathrow Taxis have also installed chip and pin devices. Managing director of the firm told Chip and Pin Solutions that by having the machines installed, the drivers are safer because they are able to carry around less cash.
It also makes tallying up the accounts at the end of the day a lot easier, he said.
