Post Office and Saga credit cards offer some of the best deals for paying for goods overseas, according to consumer watchdog Which?.
Which? Money also found that there is a significant difference between exchange rates offered by currency providers.
The average cost for $500 at Saga was found to be £356.64 and £356.97 at the Post Office. This means that consumers could save £34.49 by changing money at the Post Office rather than Travelex which charges £391.13 for the same amount of money, according to Which?.
Since the pound has decreased in value, it even more important to get good value for money on exchange transactions, Which? advised.
Editor of Which? Money Martyn Hocking said: "Thinking ahead and changing your money before you travel means you'll avoid getting stung at the airport - head to a city centre bureau or go online for the best deals." The consumer watchdog also advised debit and credit card holders to tell their card providers they are going abroad before they go, to avoid having transactions blocked.
Last week Abbey launched a credit card with no foreign exchange fee and no cash advance.
