Credit card users must take control of their finances, charity says
The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) admits that in many cases people are forced to use credit cards "for very good reasons," including time off work to look after sick or disabled relatives.
However, the organisation believes that in less exceptional circumstances getting into credit card debt can be avoided by sensible use.
A spokesperson for the CCCS says: "If people have been spending willy-nilly on credit cards, you can't really argue it is the bank's fault for getting them into that debt.
"We always say that people need to take control of their own finances and not bury their heads in the sand and deal with things themselves."
The CCCS was set up in the UK in 1993 to assist people who are in financial difficulty by providing free, independent, impartial and realistic advice.
