Credit card users advised to exercise caution
Credit card holders have been advised to exercise caution with online purchases.
The comments from Cifas follow research by Get Safe Online, which found almost a quarter (23 per cent) of web users said either they or their close friends and family have been a victim of phishing scams in the past 12 months.
This is compared to less than one in ten (eight per cent) who reported the crime the year before.
Cifas communications manager Richard Hurley said the internet has provided new avenues for fraudsters to exploit.
He added: "The immediacy and informality of the internet make it easier for us to drop our guard, and forget that - all too often - the sender may not be who he or she is supposed to be."
The organisation has published ways for credit card owners to avoid becoming an internet of a scam, including checking the reliability of the emails they have received.
Earlier this month, Lloyds Banking Group issued a warning about phishing to its customers.
