According to Martyn Shaw of Ecomparison, pre-paid credit cards are safer since any details that are intercepted by potential thieves will have limited use.

Setting a fixed amount of spending on a credit card means that a holder is much less likely to be the victim of an expensive fraud incident, he added.

Another piece of advice encourages web users to check the security certificates of sites.

Mr Shaw commented: "Never purchase anything from a website that is not rated as secure. Most browsers will warn users if a site is not secure.

"If you are not sure if a site is secure or not, don't take the chance – shop elsewhere."

The financial advisor also stated that users should not put sensitive personal information such as which banks they use on social networking sites to avoid prying eyes stealing credit card information.

Meanwhile, a recent survey from Alliance & Leicester found that some 30 per cent of young people are hoping to be debt free before the age of 34.

Furthermore, the average earning expectations of 16 to 21-year-old males is over £40,000 within ten years.
