Wendy van den Hende, chief executive of Personal Finance Education Group, argued it is important to teach children about finance early on in their development so they have time to build up their skills and confidence.
Her comments follow news that children from five years old will be given compulsory lessons on managing their finances from next year.
These lessons will be developed to incorporate subjects such as credit cards, mortgages and loans, once children reach secondary school.
Younger children, meanwhile, will be given lessons on how to save money in a piggy bank.
"If you think about the situation we are all in now, clearly as adults we have not been very good at managing our money," Ms van den Hende commented.
"We have to make sure that we invest in the next generation to make sure that they can do a better job of it."
